First time America did not veto; Angry Netanyahu cancels US visit of Israeli officials

A resolution has been passed in the United Nations Security Council i.e. UNSC on Monday for an immediate ceasefire in view of Ramadan between Israel and Hamas, which has been going on for 5 and a half months. During the meeting, 14 out of 15 members voted in favor of the proposal, while the US abstained from voting.

The proposal demanded the immediate release of all hostages without conditions. It has also been asked to remove all obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. This is the first time that the US has not voted on a ceasefire proposal. Before this, he has vetoed these proposals in the UNSC 3 times.

The US Vetoed The Proposal of The Ceasefire 3 Times

The first proposal to stop the war was presented by Malta in November 2023. The second time the UAE proposed in December 2023 and the third time in February 2024 was the North African country Algeria. The US rejected it all three times.

According to the New York Times, UNSC resolutions are considered international law. It is necessary for the member countries to follow them. However, Israel is not a permanent or temporary member of the UNSC.

Even if a resolution is passed in the Security Council, there is no way to implement it here. Yes, it is certain that sanctions can be imposed on Israel with the consent of the member countries.

Benjamin Netanyahu Canceled The Visit of The Israeli Delegation

Israel has expressed displeasure at the withdrawal of the United States from the UNSC voting. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled the visit of the Israeli delegation to Washington due to America not vetoing it.

Apart from this, Israeli Foreign Minister Katz said – We will not stop firing. We will destroy Hamas and continue to fight until every hostage is freed and returned home.

At the same time, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres wrote on the social media platform – The UNSC has approved a long-standing resolution in Gaza. It demanded an immediate ceasefire and unconditional release of all hostages. This proposal should be implemented soon.

What is Veto…

The UNSC has five permanent members. These include America, Russia, Britain, France and China. They have got the veto power. This is very important. The Security Council cannot pass or implement any resolution without the consent of these five countries. If one of the 5 members vetoes it, then the proposal is rejected.

Israel’s Operation ‘Swords of Iron’ Against ‘Al-Aqsa Flood’

Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. It was named the ‘Al-Aqsa Flood’ operation. In response, Israel’s military launched Operation ‘Swords of Iron’ against Hamas.

The military commander of Hamas, Mohammad Deif, said that this attack is revenge for the desecration of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem by Israel. Actually, the Israeli police threw grenades in Al-Aqsa Mosque in April 2023.

At the same time, Hamas spokesman Ghazi Hamad told Al Jazeera – this action is our answer to those Arab countries, which are increasing closeness with Israel. In recent days, it was claimed in media reports that Saudi Arabia may recognize Israel as a country on the initiative of America.
